English for PhD Students II

Course description

This course is designed for students at good intermediate level (B2+). It is focused mainly on the key vocabulary used in the academic world but also includes general English reading, listening and speaking tasks.

Course contents

I. Academic vocabulary

Talking about time, numbers, causes and effect

Opinion and ideas (reporting what others say, analysis of results, degrees of certainty, using evidence in arguing a point)

Functions (making a presentation, describing research methods, describing states and processes, comparing and contrasting, describing problems, describing change, summary and conclusion)

II. General English

Grammar review (the passive, if-structures; linking phrases, confusable structures, relative clauses)

Ad hoc speaking, reading and listening activities
